CITY OF CHARLOTTE, NC PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, that in tribute to the writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, deceased on April 23h, 1616, each year is celebrated in this date the Day of Spanish Language.

WHEREAS, Cervantes left among their works the novel The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha, monumental text that contributed to the enhancement of world literature and Spanish language.

WHEREAS, the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County is home for more than 125,000 Hispanic immigrants and natives with roots from 21 different Spanish Speaking countries.

WHEREAS, the Day of Spanish Language will be commemorate in the City by the Charlotte’s Patriotic Celebrations and Traditions Committee and the World Languages Department of Queens University.

WHEREAS, the City of Charlotte should celebrate this special day on April 23th, 2018.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Vi Lyles, Mayor of Charlotte, do hereby proclaim April 23th, 2018, as

“Spanish Language Day”

In Charlotte and commend its observance to all citizens.
